Interference

How is it possible to interfere with peoples daily life by using graphic design? We’re continually exposed to work of design. It might be fair to suggest that we’ve gradually become accustomed to filtering and ignoring most intrusive information. Do ignored instances of communication register in our subconscious?

Westerdals’ core values are Generous, Real, Bold and Curious. But how much does this actually affect our work on a daily basis? Can curiousity be triggered by bold disturbances to everyday events? Is it likely that this will be met with a generous spirit?

The purpose of the project was to explore how graphic design might be utilised (and abused) in order to create disturbances, to influence and manipulate.

108 graphic design students took part in this workshop at Westerdals Oslo ACT tutored by Sam Bannister, Yann Bougaran and Margaret Rynning.

Task  To create a series of large an small scale interferences. You may provoke, upset, surprise, manipulate, entertain and charm. The only rules are that you must not destroy or damage anything significant; especially yourself, others or property. Utilise ALL conceivable resources. Use these in new and previously unimagined ways. Be daring. Your results will depend largely on your own decisions, wit, imagination, determination, effort and courage.
